I went into surgery on January 14 to remove my calcified shunt tubing. . I felt wonderful after this procedure and continued to feel good until the Saturday before my two-week postop appointment, when I fell in the bathroom and one of the incisions opened up and started pouring out fluid, which turned out to be cerebrospinal fluid. I then went into my two-week post-op appointment, and they closed it up with a Steri-Strip, and I went home. On my way home. I spiked a fever. We called the doctor and he had me come into the emergency room and they did emergency surgery to close up the tubing that was dripping fluid and also to clean out an abscess that had formed in my chest from one of the wounds. After that I was in surgical ICU and the cultures from my cerebral spinal fluid came back showing that I had a bacteria that caused meningitis in my spinal fluid in addition to another bacteria that was in the abscess that was cleaned out so they started me on IV antibiotics which I did not tolerate well. I went home with a pick line in with the IV antibiotics and after a week of being in so much pain, my parents and my Neurosurgeon decided that would be best and not that difficult to remove the rest of my tubing because it was hardware in that was touching my cerebral spinal fluid so on February 15 I went back into the surgery to remove the rest of my shunt. They had continued the IV antibiotics’s was just still causing me a lot of discomfort and after the cerebrospinal fluid came back clean, they were able to stop the IV antibiotics and put me on an oral antibiotic. I went home, and as my parents were helping me out of the car, I had a seizure. because my CT scan on Saturday was clean my Neurosurgeon did not send me to the ER right away but when I had another seizure, we went back to the ER and we did another CT scan, which was also clean so they decided that it may actually be the anabiotic‘s that I was on that was causing all of this so they took me off the antibiotics and observed me in the surgical ICU once again for the rest of that week, I did not have another seizure so they sent me home on Thursday that Saturday that Friday. I had another seizure, so they started me on seizure meds. With the likelihood that the seizures were caused by either the meningitis or the removal of the VP shunt that was in my brain for 22 years.
